A fast coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the Sun the evening of October 8 — ten billion tons of plasma traveling at two million miles per hour. Arriving at Earth two days later, this CME generated a massive geomagnetic storm, causing bright and active aurora extending to far southern latitudes.
